The Zombie Movie Database is the ultimate resource – not only for zombie geeks, but for anybody looking for a great zombie film to watch on a Friday night. The database can be sorted and searched, allowing the user to powerfully drill-down through the data.
A little bit about the DB.
The database currently holds a stonking 431 zombie films. The majority of these have been made after the year 2000, with the huge peak in zombie films that occurred after the runaway success of 28 Days Later. The phenomenon of peak zombie is discussed in more detail in this blog post.
One standout feature of the database is just how bad most zombie films are (you can sort the list from worst to best). The list of films contains, quite frankly, some of the worst films ever made. Even the names can be god-damn awful, with such favourites as “Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead” and “Die-ner (Get It?)”. The database also includes the film with the longest ever English language title: “Night of the Day of the Dawn of the Son of the Bride of the Return of the Revenge of the Terror of the Attack of the Evil, Mutant, Alien, Flesh Eating, Hellbound, Crawling, Zombified Living Dead Part 2: In Shocking 2-D”.
How was the DB constructed?
The list of zombie films was sourced from Wikipedia. This list was then used to run queries on IMDB, using their programming API. Some of the films from wiki weren’t present in IMDB, which explains the fact that our DB is a little bit shorter than their list. There’s quite a bit of fun to be had with the data, and in coming posts we will be slicing-and-dicing the data and getting dirty with the metrics.
The database is in beta, so please do shoot me a message if you spot any errors or omissions
